<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I tried to find insulation boards here on this island of 1.65 million people to make a design wall. There weren't any to be bought. Besides, how would I get the board<span style="font-family: inherit;"> home? On a bus? The subway? I don’t have a car. At 96” x 48”, what sort of vehicle could accommodate it?</span></span></div>
</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I had resorted to using a metal door and magnets to hold blocks on the front door.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">Eventually I got some boards and let me tell you, they are worth their weight in gold! I ordered the boards from Lowe’s. The nearest was in New Jersey! When I learned the cost of basic delivery (omg) I doubled my order to four boards. Those boards could not come fast enough; I could hardly wait for them to arrive. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Finally the truck arrived. The doorman called me on the intercom to announce two men were on the way up. I waited, and waited, and waited. Where had they gone? I buzzed down to the doorman. “Mrs. Solomon,” he said, “the boards are 96 inches tall. They won’t fit in the elevator. The men are on their way, walking up the stairs.” Gulp. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I made my first portable design wall with batting and white duct tape. It was sort of like Scotch taping a hem in place. Awkward and inelegant. I wondered if I could encasing a board in a ‘pillowcase’ made of batting instead of using tape or pins. The answer was YES. If you want to get an idea of what the boards look like in real life, <a data-mce-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1jpDQHMp-E" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1jpDQHMp-E" style="border: 0px; color: #047ac6; line-height: 1.42857em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" target="_blank">click here.</a> </span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;">For the 'pillowcase' I chose cotton batting</span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;"> because quilt blocks will “stick” to cotton. To keep the pillowcase from stretching over time, I chose cotton batting with a polypropylene scrim. I would expect a blend — say 80 percent cotton and 20 percent polyester — to work just fine as well. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I chose Queen Size (</span><strong style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 1.42857em;">90” x 108”</strong><span style="font-family: inherit;">) batting to make the pillowcase. Here’s my reasoning and math:</span></div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 1.42857em; margin-bottom: 0.714285em; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">I needed at least 84” top-to-bottom + wiggle room, so <strong style="line-height: 1.42857em;">90” </strong><span style="font-family: inherit;">would be sufficient</span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">The board is 48” across the front and 48” across the back; 96” in all. I figured <strong style="line-height: 1.42857em;">108”</strong><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">would be sufficient to cover the combined 96” and to generously allow 2” for the left edge and 2” for the right edge. </span> 96 + (2 + 2) = 100</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">If it’s hard to wrap your head around the scale of this, pretend you are making a </span><em style="border: 0px; line-height: 1.42857em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">pillowcase </em><span style="font-family: inherit;">with the board being your pillow.</span></span></div>

</div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 1.42857em; margin-bottom: 0.714285em; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></b>
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">Step 3:</span></b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Sew along the top and side of the pillowcase, but not along the bottom and not along the folded side. I sewed with a 1¼” seam allowance. That’s 1¼” away from the marked line, toward the edge of the batting. Trim away excess batting from the top and the side, leaving about an inch in case you need to make an alteration. Turn the pillowcase inside-out to conceal the seams.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 1.42857em; margin-bottom: 0.714285em; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Along the top edge, the seam allowance isn’t critical. The pillowcase will be too long as it is.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 1.42857em; margin-bottom: 0.714285em; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Consider sewing the side with a very long stitch; a basting stitch is easier to rip out if necessary. Then try out the pillowcase. If it’s a go, reinforce the basting if you wish.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 1.42857em; margin-bottom: 0.714285em; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In this <a data-mce-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRkeVobJu1o&feature=youtu.be" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRkeVobJu1o&feature=youtu.be" style="border: 0px; color: #047ac6; line-height: 1.42857em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" target="_blank">sewing video,</a> I demonstrate how I use the <b>Elna </b>AcuFeed foot which acts as a walking foot, a size #14 quilting needle and a long stitch.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 1.42857em; margin-bottom: 0.714285em; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Placing the pillowcase over your board:</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">To load the pillowcase, I stood facing a free-standing sofa and held the board upright in front of me. I tilted the board and let it fall back onto the sofa. The sofa supported the far end of the board while the pillowcase was slipped over the near end.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">After a few inches are loaded, it should slide on. Be patient. If it doesn’t slide on, then resew and increase the seam allowance. Then remove the side stitches that served as “pins.”</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">If the pillowcase isn’t as taut as you’d like, resew or clamp with large metal binding clips.</span></div>
</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 1.42857em; margin-bottom: 0.714285em; padding: 0px;">
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<b>Finishing your portable design wall:</b><span style="text-indent: 0in;"> </span></div>
<span style="text-indent: 0in;">It will take two people to maneuver
the pillowcase over the board. To finish, either cut off the excess at the
bottom (you have the previously marked line for a guide) or tuck excess up into
an inside-out hem.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Do you use a <i>serger</i>? I do. After trying on the pillowcase for fit, I serged off excess batting, neatening the three raw edges:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li>I unstitched the side seam near the bottom</li>
<li>Then, I serged off the bottom edge, an ‘open’ single layer</li>
<li>From there, I serged along the top</li>
<li>Finally, I serged the side from top-to-bottom. It turned out so pretty.</li>
</ol>

Nichole Ramirez and Elisabeth Woo, who I met through the Robert Kaufman Fabric company, wrote the brilliant and delightful book "The Fussy Cut Sampler." It's a fabulous book, which I know from experience as I am making their blocks, their way, and loving the process.<br />

<br />
I curated a collection of my favorite solid color fabrics, The Make It Simpler Palette, for Robert Kaufman Fabrics.<br />
<br />
The collection works extremely well together as you can see in my quilt below which was finished and quilted by Janice E Petre.<br />
<br />
Now a wonderful book, Rock Solid, compiled by Karen M. Burns of 13 designer quilts made entirely of Kona fabrics has been published.<br />
It's a fabulous resource.<br />
<br />
<br />
Isn't the image a wonderful staging? Martingale, the publisher included the ground in all of the book's quilts, givng a them a spatial relationship.<br />

August 21, 2016<br />
<br />
It's Sunday morning. I'm at my desk, <i>never with a cup of coffee</i>, absorbed in an <b>Electric Quilt </b>project when an email from <b>Electric Quilt</b> arrives. What a coincidence, I must grab a screenshot:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>
<br />
The message is: <i><b>What's new and trending at DoYouEQ.com</b></i>? Whoa! I see my name, I see my block, it's Déjà vu all over again!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nw-BGIk4rEA/V7n-qUs7CBI/AAAAAAABE-w/xeIQbY-bazUrPbg39GpzJfc6EvvwT5AYQCPcB/s1600/EQ%2BUnbiased%2Bblocks.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nw-BGIk4rEA/V7n-qUs7CBI/AAAAAAABE-w/xeIQbY-bazUrPbg39GpzJfc6EvvwT5AYQCPcB/s400/EQ%2BUnbiased%2Bblocks.jpg" width="292" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It's a complete surprise to me. <a href="http://doyoueq.com/Emails/2016/DoYouEQ-August2016-2.html">EQ's message includes a Lesson with links to my video and free pattern</a> EQ uses the Unbiased block to demonstrate a rotation lesson. You must check out their post. It's a <a href="http://doyoueq.com/lessons/candy-striper/">goldmine</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CVy2RCQk_qo/V7n3DvCatuI/AAAAAAABE-c/dk6fTl3Q1JMd4ANfiYFHrdDaVXuVV3f2ACPcB/s1600/File_001%2B%25281%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CVy2RCQk_qo/V7n3DvCatuI/AAAAAAABE-c/dk6fTl3Q1JMd4ANfiYFHrdDaVXuVV3f2ACPcB/s200/File_001%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
I've got a boxful of leftover Unbiased Blocks. Recently my friend Karen took a stack off my hands and put this top together. With sashing! With a Mitered border! No wonder she's smiling ...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z5fASItdtDE/V7n3CqCQeoI/AAAAAAABE-c/4oxhxe14ebY8zJDBqx5ojz377UMT6_kEACPcB/s1600/Karen%2BCandy%2BStriper%2BUnbiased%2BBlocks.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z5fASItdtDE/V7n3CqCQeoI/AAAAAAABE-c/4oxhxe14ebY8zJDBqx5ojz377UMT6_kEACPcB/s320/Karen%2BCandy%2BStriper%2BUnbiased%2BBlocks.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
but a few minutes earlier she was surprised as were we all at the City Quilter...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-maphQSdd0uc/V7n3C_6GW-I/AAAAAAABE-c/gGyya6d-dtck2tMcxM5CGLnkHqHf4xk4ACPcB/s1600/IMG_6180.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-maphQSdd0uc/V7n3C_6GW-I/AAAAAAABE-c/gGyya6d-dtck2tMcxM5CGLnkHqHf4xk4ACPcB/s320/IMG_6180.JPG" width="242" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was a close call</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyXwazFoBy5WyrSDvm4vsZNQzjOaUfnOCET2xklBo-PyPbYPhUVTRdW6D-dJYsxir64aIQb-L3cuuY' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>

I give in. I'll use the word. AWESOME<br />
I love to choose fabrics. I love to sew. And I get a kick from making it simpler. So...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsmUhP05SXNSb7JxpZPcEGH6A_L187SSBjWhg_CGWoR-nwBhzT11SDnMAIwoUlmtQLxYb6hqd2RLtrWOlyICQrFoJbZ9N7fOnjzchVX4CQ0ELWYbC_6qNVh2pD5avZIKHE0QLF/s1600/Bow+Twist+Cotton+Steel+crop.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsmUhP05SXNSb7JxpZPcEGH6A_L187SSBjWhg_CGWoR-nwBhzT11SDnMAIwoUlmtQLxYb6hqd2RLtrWOlyICQrFoJbZ9N7fOnjzchVX4CQ0ELWYbC_6qNVh2pD5avZIKHE0QLF/s640/Bow+Twist+Cotton+Steel+crop.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
I recorded <a href="https://shrsl.com/2p30m"><b>a class for Craftsy</b></a> which demonstrates my new methods. You can't tell what I do by looking at my work but if you watch the preview you'll see awesomeness. For starters, I did <b>not </b>sew triangles to the corners of the blocks below <b>nor </b>did I sew any Geese units for the stars above.<br />

September 2015<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.ctpub.com/">C&T Publishing</a> encouraged its authors to mark this <b>National Sewing Month</b> and<b> </b>I got on board. My contribution is a very special Hexagon pattern that's been, unbelievably, under wraps for ten years.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiASR7JZTaEiezqb-9xSAoJDUYnzMRppLzCGyXL3UwKkcnBPhxqBAJ7mClOx7xpy1t2G9l0ZJ8kMGGW5MzGYmBguIIEtiRJnKCHEnKq9OrMJuvQgr3qjRI6FJVdaoUhknflng2R/s1600/Screen+Captures2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="196" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiASR7JZTaEiezqb-9xSAoJDUYnzMRppLzCGyXL3UwKkcnBPhxqBAJ7mClOx7xpy1t2G9l0ZJ8kMGGW5MzGYmBguIIEtiRJnKCHEnKq9OrMJuvQgr3qjRI6FJVdaoUhknflng2R/s640/Screen+Captures2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="color: #f6b26b;">How to Make the Best Use of Fabric</span></b></div>
Use my line drawing to <i><b>turn a 10" square of fabric into 7 hexagons (and 4 half-hexagons</b></i><b>)</b> in 10 cuts. Without waste.<br />
<br />
It's typical of patterns in my <a href="http://bit.ly/PineappleQuilt" target="_blank">Rotary Cutting Revolution</a> book. Efficient cutting without waste or measuring.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9ebFP2TX4T94gJ_DI2pV1B06gOzV0zzWPXpE7EUIwvi1kGMvmw5dp8HpjajmXwurDlX-XBInEah51B1H78TpMcsfGRkAUSb2HTQGCTIv3SwGL8Oyas40rEj7KquSm8P5aXbZS/s1600/IMG_0494+sm+crop.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9ebFP2TX4T94gJ_DI2pV1B06gOzV0zzWPXpE7EUIwvi1kGMvmw5dp8HpjajmXwurDlX-XBInEah51B1H78TpMcsfGRkAUSb2HTQGCTIv3SwGL8Oyas40rEj7KquSm8P5aXbZS/s400/IMG_0494+sm+crop.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I got together with Rachel Low here in New York at her <a href="http://pinsandneedlesnyc.com/">Pins & Needles</a> shop. Rachel is the C&T author of <a href="http://pinsandneedlesnyc.com/my-book/">Girl's Guide to DIY Fashion</a> We helped each other to make our how to videos. Have a look at mine, and if you hear a phone ring once, well, rings happen.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe frameborder="0" height="440" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XnRXfO685W4" width="600"></iframe>
</div>
These fabric hexagons are suited for English Paper Piecing EPP. After making the video I polished up the pattern and made it available as this free PDF <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5X5dp-XrLudOEtWb0FTOXdHXzg/view?usp=sharing&resourcekey=0-RJ5_bWlVloMNAosD7NiN3A" target="_blank">download</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My technique-filled class <a href="http://bit.ly/TradBlocks" target="_blank">Traditional Blocks Made Simple</a> is on Craftsy. It includes as a bonus the PDF of Rotary Cutting Revolution. Identical to the paperback version complete with 300+ photos and easy to print patterns. All in all, a sweet deal to celebrate National Sewing Month for yourself.<br />

<i>You say Tomato, I say Tomato</i><br />
Some say Square in a Square, I've always called it <i>Square-on-Point</i><br />
<br />
Whatever you call it, I cut and piece it Simpler. There is no waste other than eight teeny tiny triangles.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNCQta5uGmGoOpzqTJJCuPplu6T-McxdiH9Y7VxVn_OIqAlPm6nDBR5ZzMt0xB3D42Gp_AVojfF1eQBOKZpnjynxYmhaaX0AKY0oj-hTktqBD6NtEgFWDR81ioqiewEct0pJaz/s1600/Craftsy+Square+on+Point+for+AGS+Blog.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNCQta5uGmGoOpzqTJJCuPplu6T-McxdiH9Y7VxVn_OIqAlPm6nDBR5ZzMt0xB3D42Gp_AVojfF1eQBOKZpnjynxYmhaaX0AKY0oj-hTktqBD6NtEgFWDR81ioqiewEct0pJaz/s320/Craftsy+Square+on+Point+for+AGS+Blog.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Two squares of fabric yield the equivalent of two quilt blocks + eight teeny tiny leftover triangles. For 40 blocks, you'd need 40 squares of fabric. For 100 blocks, you'd need 100 squares of fabric.<br />

In the <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2015/06/sweet-summertime-dreams/" target="_blank">Sweet Summertime Dreams</a> column I mentioned my intention to remain in New York this summer. I'm thrilled everyday that the plan worked out.<br />
<br />
I became better acquainted with newest machine "Elna Dunham" and progressed on an upcoming Elna group project "100 blocks in 50 days."<br />

Terri Zegart is the daughter of Shelly "Why Quilts Matter" Zegart. In
mid-September 2001, I wanted to make blocks like those on the cover of the book jacket. I was smitten by the diamond stars which formed in the center of every four blocks.<br />
<br />
I figured out the construction after line drawing the block in Electric Quilt. I went on to paper piece six inch blocks each entirely on one
uncut sheet of vellum paper. Not four four pieces of paper but one piece that folded but was never cut apart <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizRn2oGQt5GOgXrQMrk7qhKUVhmv79asTr_WTPao9FD8BdddRVUA1DnYDF-izloGXXa5ICtF_EXyUE2jUvd_L2SS45Dkg9STNOU0qw0XZ7i1URHxR5etEjoh_hQE3cZbe2iLVd/s1600/Zegart+2015-001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizRn2oGQt5GOgXrQMrk7qhKUVhmv79asTr_WTPao9FD8BdddRVUA1DnYDF-izloGXXa5ICtF_EXyUE2jUvd_L2SS45Dkg9STNOU0qw0XZ7i1URHxR5etEjoh_hQE3cZbe2iLVd/s320/Zegart+2015-001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Neither Terri nor Shelly could identify a name for the block. The cover quilt came from a prop house. I love this block. I would have married it if i wasn't already married. It was published in 2003 in my first paper piecing book and changed the course of my professional life<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
For Volume 11 the block, below, is presented at 12 inches and is not paper pieced.<br />
The fabrics are Liberty of London prints<br />

I've
always intended the posts on this blog to be a quiltmaking resource and
less about me. Well last month I undertook writing a
personal column for Craftsy, <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/blog/author/anita-grossman-solomon/" target="_blank">The Fiber of My Being with Anita Grossman Solomon</a><br />
Craftsy asked for the emotional and humorous aspects of being a maker and I'm happy to oblige.<br />
<br />
I won't tell you the age of my Yo-Yo doll above but we've been together since my childhood. You can learn more in the column.<br />
<br />
As for resources, this week I'm ensconced in my sewing room. I'm always envious when teaching that everyone in a workshop except for me is sewing. When I get home my desk captures me and it's days to weeks before I can sew for myself<br />
<br />
The best of both worlds is that I'm now adding finishing touches to a series of new "Make It Simpler" patterns. Just you wait and see the construction shortcuts I have in store for you<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's in the International Quilt Study Center & Museum collection. Quilts of Concentric Squares have long fascinated me. The one above is currently the featured IQSC&M Quilt of the Month. With one stripe fabric per quilt, and no leftovers, I can make a <b><i>reversible </i></b>Xcentric quilts. Front and back together, <i><b>only a total of four seams</b></i><br />

I’m still smiling from an amazing week in Houston at Market and Festival. The icing on the cake was actually sharing in the celebrations for Robert Kaufman’s 30th Anniversary of Kona Cottons. And the party didn’t stop in Houston. Today’s my day to be the blog stop on the “30 Quilts for 30 Years” blog hop which runs through December 3rd with daily prizes throughout. The look book created for this milestone is just too delicious – take a <b><a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/release/october2014/kona-cotton-30quilts-30years/" target="_blank">peek</a></b> and download a copy for yourself !<br />
<br />
Words can’t express how excited I was to see my Two-Color Coral and Indigo Pineapple quilt photographed so beautifully and included among the work of so many talented designers. Each and every one of these quilts is gorgeous it its own right, and yet when put together in the wonderful “30 Quilts for 30 Years” look book their beauty is even further enhanced.<br />
<br />
Want to get started on a quilt of your own? Well thanks to Kaufman Fabrics, and Craftsy and <a href="http://www.ctpub.com/" target="_blank">C&T Publishing</a>, I'm able to GIVEAWAY <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/pre-cut/konareg_cotton_2014_new_colors_4/" target="_blank"><b><i>a charm pack of the 32 new Kona colors</i></b></a><br />

Last spring while teaching my Pineapple quilt on a quilting cruise through the Panama Canal I received an email from Nichole at Kaufman Fabrics about their Kona anniversary project. I didn't know Nichole but was thrilled to learn that she and all of the Kaufman look book ringleaders were devout quilters<br />

Flashback: In 2004 I experimented with a new way to rotary cut Pineapple blocks using Kona Cotton so sewing up a new one for the Anniversary seemed in order. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BSUU1RlN9LI/VFxdU2-TnKI/AAAAAAAAk14/_jHBpnP4PDY/s1600/Solomon%2B2014%2BOriginal%2BTwo-Color%2BKona%2BPineapple.JPG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="183" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BSUU1RlN9LI/VFxdU2-TnKI/AAAAAAAAk14/_jHBpnP4PDY/s1600/Solomon%2B2014%2BOriginal%2BTwo-Color%2BKona%2BPineapple.JPG" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My first Pineapple block emerging as photographed in 2004</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This time I chose classic Kona Cotton coral and indigo for their contrast. I cut through lines on my paper cutting guide to get <b>64 perfectly-sized patches</b> for two blocks in less than two minutes. I used only 14 rotary cuts to get the 64 patches without measuring.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0Dt7iuFU-TE/VFxsH1R3vJI/AAAAAAAAk3g/66rHseXBK_8/s1600/Kaufman%2BKona%2BIdea.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="211" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0Dt7iuFU-TE/VFxsH1R3vJI/AAAAAAAAk3g/66rHseXBK_8/s1600/Kaufman%2BKona%2BIdea.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">From Fabric to CuttingLines to Patches without measuring</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I’m sure I’m not the only designer who depends on Kona’s richly hued, colorfast and easy to work with solid cottons when they want to make an impact.<br />

I taught on two cruises this year. The ship's cruise director concluded
every shipboard announcement by exhorting passengers to go "Out and
About!" So out on deck I went to swim and marvel at the Panama Canal and eventually
bask in Glacier Bay</div>

When I teach a workshop, on land or sea, I'm always envious of the quilters. I watch them enjoy their fabric and sigh to myself, Oh! Anita Sue, I want to sew! So sew I did late this summer and magic happened. The weather was mild, my iron was hot and I was on a roll. The short version is I have new techniques to unveil, blocks with Half-square Triangles and Flying Geese units made Simpler. After seeing online images of quilters' triangle waste and block trimmings I was inspired to explore a different approach.</div>
<br />
As a result, a pattern will debut in the Nov/Dec '14 issue of Quiltmaker magazine. Yes! If it weren't for the careful magazine staff, this pattern would remain unedited, untested and unknown.<br />
<br />
If you're curious as to what will keep me from sewing in the coming months - have a look at my just published <a href="http://bit.ly/AnitaSept14Newsletter" target="_blank">newsletter</a> (lots of pictures) and <a href="http://bit.ly/NewsletterAnitaSignUp" target="_blank">sign up</a> for future issues.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
What inspired Tribal Crossing?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The "blade" shape seen in the traditional Key West Beauty block that I patterned in one of my paper piecing books. It became a 30 inch quilt which grew to a 38 foot wide image in Times Square <a href="http://makeitsimpler.blogspot.com/2010/01/up-in-lights-december-2009.html" target="_blank">Details</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I reprised the shape in my signature No-Waste Windmill block <a href="http://bit.ly/1kpgIzR" target="_blank">Details</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">What techniques were used?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DFCbmJiB3U0/U0vz33CnjgI/AAAAAAAAgKU/7Wo3OgHQ2zo/s1600/68-QM+Kinetic+Modern+XO-048.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DFCbmJiB3U0/U0vz33CnjgI/AAAAAAAAgKU/7Wo3OgHQ2zo/s1600/68-QM+Kinetic+Modern+XO-048.jpg" height="244" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Corbel, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">• </span>It's paper pieced with appliquéd circles. I cinched the circles over 1" mylar circles</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S6JGbebu8Ow/U2MEduHOp-I/AAAAAAAAgOc/YZl6aEMVUAA/s1600/QM+Tribal+Crossing+circles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S6JGbebu8Ow/U2MEduHOp-I/AAAAAAAAgOc/YZl6aEMVUAA/s1600/QM+Tribal+Crossing+circles.jpg" height="320" width="262" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
How did you make the circles?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Corbel, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">• </span>I could have fused them per Quiltmaker's recommendation but wanting handwork during travel, I needle-turned them and then attached them with a machine zig zag stitch</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Are the circles necessary?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Corbel, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">• </span>They are the icing on the cake don’t you think?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Do you precut patches for paper piecing the background?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Corbel, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">• </span>I do</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Templates may be made by cutting a couple of Tribal Crossing patterns apart into subunits. Before cutting out the subunits, add a 1/4 inch seam allowance to each subunit. I use paper templates that I generate with <a href="http://bit.ly/SfNFIX" target="_blank">Electric Quilt (EQ) software</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Corbel, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">• </span>There are two sets of shapes that are the reverse of each other. They’re asymmetrical. That's four patches plus the center triangle<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Corbel, sans-serif; font-size: 16.363636016845703px;">•</span><span style="font-family: Corbel, sans-serif; font-size: 16.363636016845703px;"> </span>I also used EQ to mock up other colors:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1R-sCbNBp6Y/U0voPY3PIBI/AAAAAAAAgCM/XiUnnPeRHUA/s1600/25-Fullscreen+capture+1142013+100933+PM.bmp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1R-sCbNBp6Y/U0voPY3PIBI/AAAAAAAAgCM/XiUnnPeRHUA/s1600/25-Fullscreen+capture+1142013+100933+PM.bmp.jpg" height="300" width="320" /></a></div>
How many templates are needed to cut the four patches? </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4XHtCQEeGj8/U0vu4PsG_kI/AAAAAAAAgGQ/bttq-vl7_To/s1600/26-IMG_6586.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4XHtCQEeGj8/U0vu4PsG_kI/AAAAAAAAgGQ/bttq-vl7_To/s1600/26-IMG_6586.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Corbel, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">• </span>Only two. The trick is to always cut two same shape patches simultaneously from a folded piece of fabric. It won't matter if you fold the fabric right side or wrong sides together (Yes, you could use one patch and layer the fabric in fourths)</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9nuz5e1bp-Q/U0vzW3qmLnI/AAAAAAAAgKE/9Sz63Fve9R0/s1600/63-Solomon+Kinetic+XO-006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9nuz5e1bp-Q/U0vzW3qmLnI/AAAAAAAAgKE/9Sz63Fve9R0/s1600/63-Solomon+Kinetic+XO-006.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
It won't matter if the template is right side or wrong side up. You'll wind up with two patches that are always the reverse of each other. As long as you can cut through two layers of fabric, you've got it made.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
What paper do you print the foundation pattern on?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Corbel, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">• </span>I use my very own thin translucent vellum, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Foundations-Translucent-Vellum-Paper/dp/1571208216/ref=as_li_tf_ssw?&linkCode=wss&tag=makeicom-20&link_code=as3&creative=373489&camp=211189" target="_blank">Simple Foundations</a>, for my original no-pin paper piecing method</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
How do you get away with no pins? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li>Get creative and position two copies of the foundation onto a sheet of paper exactly across from each other, 1/2" apart. The words “Tribal Crossing Section” in the seam allowances will be opposite each other</li>
<li>Print this composite onto a sheet of vellum</li>
<li>Carefully fold and crease the vellum in half so that each section is aligned exactly on top of each other. You need vellum to see the alignment Piece the sections Refold the pieced foundation along the original crease</li>
<li>Without a pin, sew the same seam that you would have if you had pieced two separate sections Think of Humpty-Dumpty. If you don’t cut a foundation pattern apart, you don’t have to put it back together again</li>

After seeing Alex Anderson in the video, head over to see more of her, and Ricky Tims in The Quilt Show. Quilters often tell me that they loved and miss Alex's show. Oh my goodness, they have been missing out on her. <a href="http://www.thequiltshow.com/os/index.php" target="_blank">The Quilt Show's 169 shows are available this weekend at no charge</a>. I've been <a href="http://makeitsimplerworkshops.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">teaching </a>quiltmaking for 20 years. I'm always teaching online at <a href="https://makeitsimpler.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_4.html" target="_blank">Craftsy</a>; in a few weeks I'll be teaching on the first of four upcoming quilt cruises. It will transit the Panama Canal.<br />
<br />
A former teacher and my brothers figure in my blogging.<br />
<br />
Back in the day, in my biology class, Mr. Roycroft graded our essays by counting<i> intelligent statements. </i>An essay required a minimum of 3 paragraphs. A paragraph required a minimum of three sentences. Sentences were counted only if they were intelligent statements. No filler was allowed.<br />
<br />
In the margin top of my essay a cryptic grade was penned in red ballpoint. The best grade was <span style="font-family: "corbel" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"> </span><span style="color: #f4cccc; font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><b>vgwog</b><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"> </span></span>which meant 'very good work old girl.' A boy might receive <span style="color: #f4cccc; font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><b>vgowob</b></span>. I was 14 years old, Simon and Garfunkel had released "Mrs. Robinson" and the best AP grade I ever received was in biology.<br />
<br />
I have two younger brothers. Growing up I briefly kept a diary. I kept it locked. I was naive. Of course my brothers picked the lock. They were also adept in opening a locked bathroom door.<br />
<br />
I don't blog about anything that I want to keep from my brothers and I won't take up your time with filler. I'd rather be in my sewing room than at my computer, wouldn't you?<br />
<br />
Enjoy this Worldwide Quilting Day,<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicgB_Gp-xmCAMfO07kj1TETItF71xA5goDP6qFseYDGT0yCFHvYBo0WNGEvNO3xgA7AjZpsIwD4FYnD1FxP325GMsyurGGLyPeeUHu2h_9t5jUSgdkWIJcba0H5YlYGul7NDQ0/s1600/Concentric+Red+and+White+%2528wild+by+design+book%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicgB_Gp-xmCAMfO07kj1TETItF71xA5goDP6qFseYDGT0yCFHvYBo0WNGEvNO3xgA7AjZpsIwD4FYnD1FxP325GMsyurGGLyPeeUHu2h_9t5jUSgdkWIJcba0H5YlYGul7NDQ0/s400/Concentric+Red+and+White+%2528wild+by+design+book%2529.jpg" width="395" /></a></div>
When Faye Burgos designed Strip-IT <span style="font-family: Corbel, sans-serif;">™</span> yardage in black and white for <a href="http://www.marcusfabrics.com/" target="_blank">Marcus Fabrics</a> I immediately made a two-sided quilt from it in 2009. The entire quilt (front and back) took me 5 seams (yes, FIVE) and 9 yards of fabrics. It's a simple techniques which I included in my book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rotary-Cutting-Revolution-One-Step-Blocks/dp/1571208291/ref=tf_ssw?&linkCode=wss&tag=makeicom-20" target="_blank">Rotary Cutting Revolution</a><br />

I checked into this because when I presented my work to the Pieces and Patches Guild earlier this week, quilters asked if Strip-It fabric was still available. It is <span style="font-family: Wingdings; font-size: 11pt;">J </span>An online search for Strip-It will turn up assorted yardage too. This Marcus fabrics video shows other ways to take advantage of Strip-It</div>

I create my favorite blocks from squares (only) of fabric. If I make two blocks, I need two squares of fabric. 100 blocks calls for 100 squares of fabric. I teach this method and so much more in my online Craftsy class. <i>Traditional Blocks Made Simple</i>. One extended lesson is <i>Anita's Arrowhead</i>, previously patterned in <a href="http://www.quiltmaker.com/patterns/details.html?idx=12909">Quiltmaker</a> <i>Included in the class is my <a href="http://bit.ly/13EWi2r">Rotary Cutting Revolution eBook</a>, a $14.99 value in itself.</i></div>

<b><span style="color: #ea9999;">Billie in Austin won the Craftsy class with the included eBook. </span></b>I'd be remiss if I didn't direct you to <span style="color: #ea9999;">another site to win </span>my Craftsy class. <a href="http://www.ctpubblog.com/2013/05/01/rotary-cutting-revolution-and-the-author-behind-it-plus-three-giveaways/">C&T Publishing's blog</a> has that and more in a giveaway to be awarded on May 9th.
